Jive Turkeys Winter 2009 Thursday 'C' Champions

02/14/2010by Mark Nations

Jive Turkeys proved seeding didn't matter as the entered the playoffs as the 10th and last seed.  These playoffs were FULL of upsets as only the #1 seed made it to the semi-finals.  #2,3 & 4 seeds all went down early in the playoffs leaving Keswick Kids #5, Islamorada #6 and Jive Turkeys #10 with #1 seed the Squad.

In the 1st semi-final The Squad faced Keswick Kids.  Its was a tight match up as only 1pt seperated the teams at half.  In the 2nd half it looked like the Squad would pull away as they built a 10pt lead but was unable to hold on to the lead.  It came down to the end where Keswick made 3 free throws at the end of the game and a last second desperation shot from the Squad fell short.  Keswick would move on to the champsionship game with a 45-43 win.

In the 2nd semi-final game #10 Jive Turkeys faced #6 Islamorada.  This was another tight game as only 1 pts seperated these 2 teams at half.  In the 2nd half Jive Turkeys size and outside shooting would prove too much.  There Big man in the middle scored 24 pts to lead them to a 54-47 win and a shot at the championship.

In the championship Keswick would battle Jive Turkeys.  Keswick had defeated them earlier in teh season by 5 but this game would prove different.  Another close game at half as Jive Turkeys lead by 2 pts.  In the 2nd half they would hold onto thier lead again lead by their big man in the middle who scored 15pts.  Keswick couldn't get the shots to fall in the end and Jive Turkeys would win the championship game 53-44.

Congratulations to the Jive Turkey's.  GSL's Winter Thursday "C" Champions.

Congratulations to HGH GSL's Summer "B" Champions.

HGH defeated Frazier and Deeter 66-64 to claim the championship.

HGH proved you only need 5 as they played with only 5 players for much of the season and in the semi-final  and championship game.  Iromman basketball prevailed this night.

HGH defeated City Boys 57-51 in the semi-final game to advance.  That was a back in forth battle that was not decided until the final buzzer.

Frazier & Deeter had a little easier path as they defeated Tetra Tech 55-33 to advance to the final game.

Team Banks Win Monday 'B' Championship

08/27/2009by Mark Nations

10 Team competed in GSL's Monday "B" basketball league.  Grease Monkeys and The Hoyas were dominant all season and finished the season and the top 2 seeds.

The Grease Monkeys were dominant in thier 1st round match up against MILF Hunters.  But in basketball anything can happen and #2 seed The Hoyas were upset by the #7 seed All-Connect All-Stars in a back and forth close game 53-51.

The Grease Monkeys would then move on to face #5 seed Team Banks who defeated #4 seed Eye Ballin in their 1st rd. match-up.  Once again the upset bug hit as Team Banks shocked the #1 seed to move on to the Championship Game.

In the other semi-final the #7 seed continued on their unprobably run through the playoffs by defeating the #3 seed City Boys.

The championship game would feature #5 seed Team Banks vs.  #7 seed All-Connect All-Stars.  Both teams battled back in forth all game but in the end Team Banks prevailed 58-53 and were crowned 2009 Monday "B" Champions.

Congrats to Team Banks!

ATL defeated Bricklayers in the champioship game 62-59.  Both teams battled back and forth all game and the Bricklayers held the lead until a minute left in the game.  It was a furious finish and the game was still in doubt until the Bricklayers final 3 pt attempt with 1.9 seconds left went in and out of the rim.  A true classic championship game.  Both teams showed great athletisim and sportsmanship throughout the game and entire season.

Atl Trojans defeated the #1 seed Thundering herd 59-57 in another nail bitter to reach the championship.  Bricklayers took down Da Wood 62-49 to earn their spot in the championship game.

Dessiahs Wins Wednesday Night Championship in Double OT

04/09/2009by Mark Nations

Dessiah’s Win Wednesday Night Championship in Classic Fashion

In one of the greatest Championship nights in GSL history Dessiah’s defeated City Boys to take home the trophy in Men’s Wednesday Basketball.  Dessiah’s finished the regular season 6-1 and the #1 seed in the 8 team league.

Eight teams began the single elimination tournament and with no upsets in the 1st round only the top 4 remained.  #1 Dessiah’s would face #4 Snappers and #2 Team Banks would face #3 City Boys.

Dessiah’s would struggle early as the Snappers was shooting for the upset.  Both teams would battle back in forth in the 2nd half as Dessiah’s continued to cut the lead with every trip up the floor.  The game would go down to the final few possessions but when the dust cleared Dessiah’s would prevail     to move on to the Championship game.

City Boys and Team Banks would shoot it out in the other semi-final game.  City Boys would jump out to an early lead as Team Banks started slowly, but by half time it was all tied up.  In the 2nd half both teams would have leads but with 47 seconds left City Boys lead by 7.  Not  ready to quit Team Banks would score 7 unanswered points to force an overtime to see who would face Dessiah’s in the Championship.  In overtime City Boys would go up again but this time would not lose the lead and would hold on to win  .

The Championship game would face #1 vs. #3.  Dessiah’s would start off very cold and the City Boys could not miss in the 1st half of the game.  The start of the 2nd half was much of the same as the City Boys had a 27 point lead early in the 2nd half.  Dessiah’s started to find their shooting touch and combined with  the City Boys shooting like the they were behind the lead slowly disappeared.  With under a minute it was a 5 point game and both teams were matching shot for shot and with 12 seconds left City Boys lead by 2.  Dessiah’s drove to the basket hit the shot and was fouled with 2 seconds remaining.  With a chance to hit the free throw for the lead until a lane violation cost them the opportunity and regulation time would end in a tie     .

In overtime City Boys and Dessiah’s would battle with no team able to take advantage.   Again with 13 seconds left City Boys lead by three as Dessiah’s took the ball down the court.   Needing a three they came down and shot from the corner and would miss, but they were able to get the rebound and shoot another three, another miss and another rebound and yet another miss, but another rebound allowed one more three point attempt and this time it hit the bottom of the net.  City Boys took the ball immediatly with 2.3 seconds and a tie game and took a shoot from just over half court with the buzzer sounding and an incredible half court shot went in….but unfortunately the buzzer sounded just before the shot left his hand.  Tied     we would go to a 2nd overtime.  Like before the teams would battle back and forth but no last second shots would be needed and this time Dessiah’s would hold on and win the Championship in one of the greatest championship games in GSL history.  Congratulations to Dessiah’s, Wednesday nights Men’s Basketball Champions.

Da Wood Monday Night Mens Champions

04/07/2009by Mark Nations

Da Wood Monday “B” Basketball Champions

18 teams began the Monday “B” league and when the season ended and the dust settled Da Wood finished on top.  They finished the regular season 6-1 and the number 1 seed in the playoffs.  They went 3-0 in the playoffs for an overall record of 9-1.

In the playoffs they faced the #9 seed Holy Innocents, #4 seed Team Nett and #2 seed Hoyas, winning all 3 to be crowned champions.  The narrowly defeated the upset minded Holy Innocent 71-69, then went on to beat Team Nett 68-52 to make it to the championship.

The top 9 teams made the “upper” playoffs and after the 1st round of games the only upset was #6 seed Coyote Logistics defeating #3 seed Team Lamb.  Our semi-final games would have #1 Da Wood vs. #4 Team Nett and #2 Hoyas vs. # Coyote Logistics.  Both of the top seeds won easily to move on to the championship which would face #1 vs. #2.

As expected the game would be close with these top 2 teams matching each other shot for shot.  With 4:00 minutes left in the game it was all tied up at 42-42.  Da Wood put the pressure on and the Hoya’s folded under the pressure.  Over the next 2:00 minutes Da Wood outscored The Hoyas 12-2.  The Hoya’s would not be able to recover and went down by 10 despite so great 3 point shooting by #42 at the end of the game.  Da Wood would win the championship 66-55 over the Hoyas.   Congratulations Monday “B” Basketball Champions DA WOOD!!!!
