Palmetto Bugs Regain 2010 Sunday 'A' Championship

04/20/2010by Mark Nations

Palmetto Bugs Re-Claim Sunday “A” Championship

After coming up short the past 2 seasons the Palmetto Bugs returned to their championship form and won Georgia Sports Leagues Sunday “A” Championship.

Finishing the season at 9-1 with their only loss to the back to back champions Dynamic, Palmetto entered the playoffs as the #2 seed.  They would defeat a scrappy Out of Shape team 12-6 and then moved on to defeat Game Time to earn a spot in the championship game.

Team Dynamic went an undefeated 10-0 this season and was looking for a league record 3-peat.  They dominated most of the season and look primed to take home a 3rd straight championship.  They would defeat the Eagles in round 1, and win a hard fought 1 pt victory over A Game to advance to play Palmetto Bugs in the Championship game.

#1 and #2 would face off for the title;   These two teams have combined for the last 5 GSL “A” league championships.  The game was everything you expected from the top 2 teams.  Both teams showing their offensive skills and defensive schemes that have made them to best 2 teams over the past several seasons.

It came down to the end as Palmetto lead by 6 late in the game.  Dynamic took only 4 plays to drive down and score to tie the game, a perfect extra point play gave them a 1 pt. lead.  Unfortunately there was still a little over a minute on the clock, plenty of time for Palmetto to drive down and score.  A huge 4th down conversion kept the game alive and it came down and goal from the 5 yard line with 13 seconds.  I leaping catch in the back of the end zone gave the Bugs the lead with 9 sec. left.  Dynamic made a great last second attempt but a beautiful 60 yard bomb bounced off a couple of players and was just inches away from landing in a Dynamic receivers hands.  Palmetto Bugs survived and won 26-21

Congratulations Palmetto Bugs.  Georgia Sports Leagues 2010 Sunday “A” Champions.

Ten Yard Fight Fall 2009 'B' Champions

It may have been the Fall Championship game but due to the weather delays the playoff and championship games took place on snow covered fields.  Check out the pictures online to view to snow played action.  Ten Yard Fight won thier 1st GSL Championship by defeating P 4 L in the Championship game.  Although their 1st championship many of the players had championship experience on previous championship teams.  For P 4 L they were not new to the runner-up feeling as this was their 4th 2nd place finish in a row for them.

Congratulations to the Thundering Herd GSL's Fall 2009 Co-Ed Flag Football Champions.  They defeated the Misfits, the #1 to take home the trophy.  #1 faced #2 in the Championship game.  It was a defense struggle as both offenses struggled to score.  Thundering Herd held a 6-0 lead until a miracle tipped pass allowed Misfits to tie the score.  There was enough time on the clock for the Herd to drive down the field and on the LAST play of the game found the endzone when a Misfits defender slipped allowing the game winning TD.  Herd win 12-6 to take home the gold.

Benchwarmer Win Summer 2009 'B' Championship

09/11/2009by Mark Nations

15 teams started GSL’s Summer 'B' Flag Football league and when the dust cleared the Benchwarmers stood alone as CHAMPIONS.

Both #1 seed P 4 L and #2 seed Benchwarmers advanced easily in their early playoffs match ups. The surprise of the playoffs was Team Elite. They came in to the playoffs as the #14 seed. They upset the #3 seed Titans, then defeated #11 Brookhaven Ballers in the 2nd round before falling to eventual champs Benchwarmers in the Semi-finals. The final four teams consisted of P 4 L, Benchwarmers, Redzone, and Team Elite.

Team Elite battled the Benchwarmers but the magic ended in the semis and the Benchwarmers advanced on to the finals. P 4 L would battle #4 Redzone in the other semi-final game and experience and fatigue would be the deciding factor. P 4 L had a little more playoff experience and Redzone was a little more fatigued as P 4 L had a 1st round bye and was only playing their 2nd game of the day. The Championship was set as #1 would face #2 P 4 L vs. The Benchwarmers.

P 4 L was no stranger to the finals as this was their 3rd consecutive trip to the Championship game. This time hoping to get their 1st championship that has eluded them the last 2 seasons. The Benchwarmers who had won a “B” championship last summer were hoping to secure a 2nd Championship in the GSL.

The game was everything you would expect in a championship game.  Both teams showed why they were the top two seeded teams in the league as they battled back in forth. They were the most experienced teams in the division and the difference in the game came down to extra points. P 4 L missed an extra point and the Benchwarmers returned one of P 4 L’s extra points which was the difference in the game. The Benchwarmers would hold on and win 23-20 to win their 2nd Championship in the GSL.

Congratulations Benchwarmers Georgia Sports Leagues Summer ‘B’ Champions.

Team Dynamic Summer 'A' Champions

09/08/2009by Mark Nations

Team Dynamic was crowned GSL's Summer 'A' Champions by deafeating 3 time champions Palmetto Bugs.

The playoffs didn't spark any major surpises as the top 4 seeds advanced to the semi-finals.  It the 1st semi-final #1 seed Palmetto Bugs fought off gutsy, determined #4 seed Regulators to advance to their 4 championship in 4 seasons in the GSL.  In the other semi-final  #3 seed Team Dynamic pulled out the win over #2 seed ATL Express to advance to the final game.

Team Dynamic was not intimidated by Palmetto Bugs.  They had defeated them in the regular season so had no fear of the 3 time GSL 'A' champions.  It was a hard fought game in wet and sloppy conditions.  Palmetto Bugs scored with .25 seconds left in the game and trailed 28-26.  They elected to go for 3 and the win, but the intended receiver slipped in the mud and the ball fell to the ground and Team Dynamic was victorious.

Congratulations Team Dynamic Summer 'A' Champions.

Quickstrike 2009 Summer Sizzler Champions

08/28/2009by Mark Nations

Quickstrike wins 2009 Summer Sizzler Championship

9 Teams came to Atlanta to compete in Georgia Sports Leagues 2009 Summer Sizzler Flag Football Tournament.  In the end only 1 point separated the champions.

At the beginning of the tournament most experts predicted a Palmetto Bugs vs. Quickstrike Championship game.  They were 50% correct as Quickstrike defeated Southern Hurricanes in their half of the semi’s to make it to the championship game, but the Palmetto Bugs were upset in their semi-finals by “A” game.

Many predicted a blow out with the athletic, fast and tournament tested Quickstrike battling a fairly new tournament team in “A” game.  Both teams had played well in pool play going undefeated.

In the championship both teams battled back in forth and “A” game gave Quickstrike all they could handle and at the end of the game scored and had a chance to tie.  But a dropped ball ended “A” games hopes of the upset and Quickstrike was able to run out the clock and preserve a 21-20 win.

Congrats to Quickstrike 2009 Summer Sizzler Champions!!

Westside Wins 2009 February Frenzy Champs

03/08/2009by Mark Nations

Westside (SC) takes February Frenzy Championship

22 teams from 5 different states descended on Atlanta for the February Frenzy flag football tournament.  Teams from Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina battled it out to be crowned 2009 February Frenzy Champions.

Saturday consisted of Pool play with all teams being played 2 games inside their pool to be seeded for Sunday’s single elimination format.  Going into Sunday’s play Untouchable Reloaded (LA) went 2-0 and was seeded #1.  Only a few points behind was Westside (SC) at #2, Thunder (MS) came in #3, Gemlawn (NC) #4, Southern Hurricanes #5 and rounding out the top 6 was High Rollers (SC).

The early games on Sunday provided only one upset as #21 seed P 4 L defeated #12 seed Vandals 14-13.  P 4 L went for 2 with no time left to pull the 1st upset of the day.  There were no other upsets as all the other higher seeded teams moved on to the 2nd round.  Four wins would be needed on Sunday to win it all so depth, experience and luck would all be needed.  Our final 8 team consisted of the top 7 seeds and #9 CMB (SC) so the quarterfinals would be some key match ups.  #2 seed Westside (SC) had a battle on their hands with Scrubs (SC) but in the end held on 21-19.  Thunder (MS) rumbled through the High Rollers (SC) 28-7 to create the 1st semi-final match up.  In the top half of the bracket Gemlawn (NC) and Southern Hurricanes (GA) went to the very end to decide a winner and the Hurricanes survived and moved on 14-12.  In the upset of the day CMB (SC) took on #1 seed Untouchables Reloaded and shocked them 20-14 to move on to the semi’s.

Thunder would face off against Westside and both teams proved they belonged in the finals.  But in the end Westside advanced 20-18.  In the other semi-final game CMB battled Southern Hurricanes.  These evenly matched teams battled back and forth but in the end overtime would be needed to decide a winner.  Both team scored in overtime but only the Hurricanes got their extra point and would move on to face Westside in the Championship.

The championship game went all Westside’s way as they dominated Southern Hurricanes 35-0 to take home the title.  Congratulations Westside (SC) 2009 February Frenzy Flag Football Champions.

Jacobs Jaguars Concourse Flag Football Champions

02/12/2009by Mark Nations
Congratulations to Jacobs for winning the Concourse League championship last night.  They defeated Auto Trader 27-21 in a classic game that went down to the very last play. Auto Trader jumped on the scoreboard 1st with a long bomb on their first drive of the game to take the lead 6-0.  Jacobs would have to punt on their 1st drive but would be able to tie the game after an interception would give them the ball back.  After the 1st quarter the game was tied 6-6.  The 2nd quarter was just as tight as both teams were able to score and both defenses made some excellent plays to keep the game tied 12-12 at half.Auto Trader would score 1st on an interception return for a TD and after the extra point they would lead 19-12.  Jacobs would answer back but was unable to convert the extra point and Auto Trader would still lead 19-18 after 3 quarters. In the 4th quarter Jacobs would score a female TD for 9 pts to lead 27-19 but Auto Trader would intercept an return the extra point to a 2pt score and the would trail on 27-21.  Auto Trader would get an interception to get the ball back with less than 5 minutes to play but Jacobs team Captain Lisa make a great interception to give Jacobs the ball back with a chance to put the game out of reach.  Auto Trader’s defense tightened up and on 4th and goal knocked the ball away to get the ball back with less than 2 minutes and no time outs.  Down 6 Auto Trader would need to drive the entire field to tie the game up.  They were able to move the ball to the 40 yard line and had one final Hail Mary for a chance to tie.  The Auto Trader receiver slipped and Jacobs was able to knock the ball down and seal the win 27-21.

Congrats to Jacobs and Auto Traders for a GREAT Championship game

Out of Shape Crowned Winter Monday Champions

02/12/2009by Mark Nations

Out of Shape takes Monday Nights Championship

The Mt. Vernon Winter Monday Night Champions were recently crowned.  Out of Shape took home their 1st Championship with a win over Pray for Rain 34-13.

Out of Shape finished the season as the #1 ranked team with a 6-1 record.  Their only loss came to the #2 seed Johnson Ferry team who was upset in their 1st game of the playoffs.  Pray for Rain finished as the #3 seed followed by Tin Lizzy’s, Discount Tire and Pro-Move.  It was a tough season with games played in all the elements of warm nights, cold nights, rain and even snow.

In the end the 2 most experienced teams faced of for the Championship.  Both teams were veteran weekend teams who have been playing in GSL’s weekend league over the past several years Pray for Rain had 1 Championship under their belt but Out of Shape was hoping to secure their 1st.  Both teams came into the big game limping.  Pray for Rain lost their starting QB to an injury as did Out of Shape losing their #1 WR to a bad ankle.

Out of Shape came out strong and jumped to a quick 20-0 lead.  Down 20-0 Pray for Rain would turn to their injured QB to come in and lead them back.  Unable to run or move he could still throw and with his leadership pulled his team to 20-13 at half.  Unfortunately he would not be able to get his team any closer as Out of Shape’s defense shut them out the 2nd half and went on to win 34-13.  Out of Shape had the league’s top ranked defense giving up less than 7 pts a game and shutting out the previous 3 teams.  Out of Shape would have their 1st league Championship.

Congrats to Out of Shape.  Mt. Vernon Winter Monday Nights Champions.

Range Rovers Win 'A' Championship

12/01/2008by Mark Nations
Range Rovers Win “A” Championship

The Range Rovers played 3 tough games but came out on top to win Georgia Sports Leagues Fall “A” Championships.  Eight teams battled for the top spot in this seasons playoffs and the Range Rovers took the top spot with the winning touchdown with only 11 seconds to play in the Championship game.

After one round of play the top (4) seeds all advanced to the 2nd round most with convincing wins.  #1 seed Area 41 defeated Spartans 27-6.  #2 Range Rovers were 7 points better than Predators 13-6.  #3 Run N Gun took out Legion of Doom 35-7 and #4 Regulators defeated Bench Warmers 27-20 in double overtime.  In the semi-final round Area 41 took down Regulators in a back and forth battle 27-19 to advance to the Championship game.  In the other semi-final Range Rovers won an OT battle with Run N Gun 14-13 and move on to face Area 41 in the Championship game.

The Championship game would have #1 & #2 battle for the Trophy and the winner would be decided in the last seconds.  Both teams drove back and forth with Area 41 struggling to stop Range Rovers triple option offense.  Area 41 lost their starting QB early in the game and struggled to move the ball or create any offense.  The Range Rovers were leading 20-14 and were executing their offense perfectly but went to the triple option one too many times.  Area 41 jumped a pitch and returned it 50 yards to tie the game up.  Neither team was able to score on the next 2 possessions and with less than 3 minutes left in the game Range Rovers would have 1 last drive to try to win in regulation.  They slowly worked their way down field and faced 4th and goal from the 3 yard line with only 11 seconds left in the game.  The Range Rovers QB scrambled left and threw a short pass back to the right and his receiver was able to make a diving catch to give them the lead 26-20.  Area 41 did not have enough time to get down field as their last desperation attempt fell short and the Range Rovers would be crowned Champions.

Quickstrike 2008 Halloween Havoc Champions

11/24/2008by Mark Nations

Quickstrike Win Halloween Havoc!

There must be something about this time of year for the guys from Quickstrike.  They have now won 2 straight Georgia Sports Leagues Halloween Havoc tournaments.  They competed with 12 teams from the south east in a 2 day 7-Man tournament.  Quickstrike is always one of the favorites when they compete in any tournament and this one was no different.  3 of the last 4 teams to win GSL’s tournaments were present so it looked to be a very competitive weekend.

The tournament started on Saturday with pool play and all 12 teams competing for seeding for Sunday’s single elimination tournament.  There was a great array of talent and styles this weekend with several new teams from across Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana all competing for the top spot.

In Pool A, Scrubs (SC) in their 1st tournament competition went 2-0 and showed they would be a team to contend with this weekend.  Led by a fiery and emotional QB they defeated Area 41 (GA) and Hitman (GA).  Georgia Heat (GA) was the other team in the pool and played with Area 41 and Hitman.  Area 41 is an experienced and talented local team and Hitmen are from the West Georgia area and getting ready for the collegiate state intramural championships in December.

In Pool B, Untouchable (LA) went 2-0 with wins over ATL Express (GA) and P 4 L (GA).  ATL Express defeated Free Nate Freeman to go 1-1.  P 4 L also went 1-1 with a win over Free Nate Freeman and a good showing against Untouchables.  Free Nate Freeman had 2 losses by only 3 pts and just missed out on going 2-0.

In Pool C, Quickstrike (LA) went 2-0 with wins of Legion of Doom and Tough Draw.  Tough Draw winner of GSL’s last tournament (Summer Sizzler) split with Quickstrike and Run N Gun.  Run N Gun a team from South Georgia traveled nearly 3 hours to compete and play with the best split with Legion of Doom and Tough Draw.

Three of the top 4 seeds were from out of state with Quickstrike #1, Untouchables #2, Scrubs #3 and Tough Draw #4.  All top 4 would receive 1st round byes in Sunday’s single elimination tournament.  Sunday started with Hitmen defeating Run N Gun and Free Nate Freeman getting revenge over P 4 L.  The 1st upset came when the #12 seed Legion of Doom defeated #5 Area 41 14-12.  Legion of Doom scored late in the game to go up 14-6 but 2 plays later Area 41 scored on a long TD pass.  The 2pt conversion failed and LOD held on to move to the next round.  ATL Express defeated Georgia Heat in OT.  Untouchables defeated Free Nate, and Quickstrike took out Hitmen.  Scrubs and ATL Express fought to the end but Scrubs prevailed to face the Untouchables in the Semi’s.  Tough Draw would defeat LOD in a close encounter, LOD missed a 2pt conversion that would have given them the win but Tough Draw moves on to the Semi’s to face Quickstrike.  The top 4 seeds held and would face off with Quickstrike vs. Tough Draw and Untouchables vs. Scrubs.

Untouchable used their speed and tournament experience to make quick work of the Scrubs 42-0.  The other semi-final pitted the final 2 from the Summer Sizzler.  Tough Draw won that one on a last second conversion.  This time Quickstrike was not going to let that happen and would win 21-6 with only a late interception return by Tough Draw making it that close.

So #1 and #2 would clash.  Two teams that know each other well both traveled nearly 8 hours and who just played last week in a championship game near New Orleans.  Now on a neutral field they would battle again.  Untouchables jumped on top 13-0 and shut out Quickstrike in the 1st half.  Untouchables would only need to stop Quickstrike once to almost seal a victory.  Quickstrike took the ball to start the 2nd half and scored to make it 13-7.  They then intercepted a pass and drove down and scored again to tie it up at 13-13.  Both teams would play strong defense until Quickstrike did just that with a pass over the middle, one move and then to the end zone for the go ahead score 19-13.  The Untouchables would have 1 drive left but on forth down a great defensive play sealed the win and Quickstrike would now be 2 time GSL’s Halloween Havoc winners.

Titans Win Back to Back Championships

The Titans are now the 2-Time Georgia Sports Leagues “B” Champions.  They defeated P 4 L  6-0 in the “B” League Championship games recently in the playoffs.

12 teams competed in the 2008 GSL Fall “B” league with a good mixture of New and Veteran teams.  In the end it was the veterans that proved to be the cream of the crop.  The top 6 seeded teams were all veteran teams.  You final 4 match up pitted #1 P 4 L versus last years runner up Gunners, and #2 Titans (Last seasons champions) verses #3 Headliners one of the most improved teams in the GSL.

P 4 L had the best offense in the league this season averaging over 27 points a game.  Their 1st two playoff games showed why as the defeated TTG 28-6 and Gunners 33-13.

The Titans would then face the Headliners.  The Headliners had the best defense in the league only giving up 6.5 points a game, the Titans would be right behind them only giving up 8.4.  The Titans defeated Heavy Hittaz 20-6 and Headliners defeated Team Elite 13-6.  This game came down to the end with the Headliners scoring at the end of the game but failing on the extra point and falling 13-12 to the Titans.

The Championship game would have the top offensive team verses one of the leagues most veteran and better defensive teams.  P 4 L had defeated the Titans in the regular season but the championship game would be tough to beat them a 2nd time.  They battled back and forth in the 1st half with never team able to score until a late bomb right before the half gave the Titans the lead 6-0.  The 2nd half proved the same as neither team could find the end zone and P 4 L’s last drive with under  a minute to play ended on a 4th down play when the ball went through the hands of the QB and fell to the ground.  Titans held on to win Back to Back Championships.  Final Score:  Titans: 6  - P 4 L:  0

X-Plosion wins Fall Co-Ed Championship

X-Plosion Win Co-Ed Championship!

The Fall Co-Ed season wrapped up with a new champion. Being crowned.  X-Plosion overcame a 0-2 start to win 10 straight and take home GSL’s Fall Co-Ed Championship.

8 teams started the season all with hopes of raising the trophy but only X-Plosion was able to accomplish that feat.  They started the season off slow but were able to turn it around and dominant the rest of the season.  The finished the season 8-2 and the #` seed for the playoffs.  Right behind them was Misfits at 7-3 and defending champions Chronics at 6-4, followed by eforum elite, Top Notch, Icare and No Drops.

All teams played tough throughout the season and showed great improvement as the season wore on.  Eforum, Top Notch and Icare were the rookies of the leagues and each had impressive wins during the season.  But when it came down to the end the 3 most experienced teams were ranked 1, 2, and 3.

In the playoffs X-Plosion advanced to the championship with a win over Top Notch.  Top Notch earned a hard fought overtime win over eforum elite.  The next game faced the teams from last season’s championship game Misfits vs. Chronics.  A huge rivalry game as all of their games has been intense and down to the last minute.  This game would be no different.  The Chronics lead late in the game 21-12 but the Misfits were able to work their way down the field and score to make 21-18.  The Misfits would need 3 pts to tie.  They went for 3 pts and a desperation throw just missed a leaping receiver in the end zone.  Chronics would move on to face X-Plosion in the Championship.

Another hard fought and close game.  X-Plosion jumped on the score board 1st to lead 6-0.  Both teams battled back and forth but were unable to score and it stayed 6-0 at half.  X-Plosion scored again to make it 12-0 and seemed to be cruising until a Chronic defender intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD.  After the successful extra point attempt it was now 12-7.  Neither team could move the ball until just a little over 2 minutes were left and the Chronics started to move the ball.  A HUGE 4th down conversion on a QB scramble kept the drive going as they drove toward the winning score.  With only 10 seconds left and the ball at the 10yrd line and 4th and goal a great defensive sack sealed the victory for X-Plosion as the ball sailed in to a Chronics player arms in the end zone. But the sack occurred before the throw and X-Plosion had held on and won the game 12-7.

Legion of Doom wins Fall 8-Man Championship

Legion of Doom Fall 8-Man Champions

Georgia Sports Leagues Fall 8-Man Champs were crowned this past week.  Legion of Doom became the 3 straight different Champion when they defeated G-Force 13-12.  Legion of Doom was the #2 seed and defeated Pray for Rain to advance to the Championship.  G-Force the #4 seed defeated The Panthers and then upset #1 Blitz to earn their way to the Championship.

G-Force started their run by defeating #5 seed The Panthers 21-6 in a back and forth heated battle.  In the end G-Forces size and experience was just too much and they were able to hold off The Panthers and earn a shot at the #1 seed and defending Champions The Blitz.  G-Force played the defending Champs tough early on but was not able to take advantage of some late arrivals by the Blitz.  Both teams fought hard back and forth and at the end of regulation the game was tied 6-6.  In OT the Blitz had G-Force stopped on 4th and goal but a penalty gave G-Force new life and they were able to capitalize and score to take the lead 12-6.  The Blitz had 4 shots at the end zone but was not able score and G-Force found themselves in the Championship game.

Legion of Doom had a 1st round bye and awaited the winner of Pray for Rain and the Bench Warmers.  Last year The Bench Warmers upset Pray for Rain in the playoffs but this year would be a different story.  Bench Warmers started out quick and scored on a 60 yard run by their QB.  Pray for Rain answered back to tie the game 6-6 then went up 13-6 before half.  Bench Warmers stopped Pray for Rain on their 1st possession and was able to tie the game us at 13-13.  Both teams played strong defense in the 2nd half until Pray for Rain drove down to take the lead 19-13 late in the game.  The Bench Warmers were able to drive down and score quickly to tie the game at 19-19.  But Pray for Rain would not be denied this year and worked their magic and scored at the end of the game to win 25-19.

Legion of Doom then played Pray for Rain.  This one would be another great tight game.  Legion led 13-0 at half but Pray for Rain shut them out in the 2nd half.  They were able to score to make the game 13-7 and with 2 minutes left in the game Pray for Rain drove down inside the LOD 20 yard line and had 4 plays for the tie or win.  LOD defense stepped up and kept Pray for Rain out and won the game 13-7 to move on to face G-Force in the title game.

Congratulations to Legion of Doom GSL’s 2008 Fall 8-Man Champions.

Palmetto Bugs GSL Summer ‘A’ Champions

The Palmetto Bugs were once again are crowned GSL ‘A’ League Champions this past weekend.  Although they suffered their 1st defeat in 3 seasons during the regular season they ran the table in the playoffs for their 4th straight title.

11 teams competed in Georgia Sports Leagues ‘A’ Summer Flag Football League.  Palmetto Bugs finished the season 9-1 with their only loss to Area 41.  Area 41 a new team to GSL started the year off slow losing their first 2 games but then went on the win their next 8 straight.  Veteran GSL team Regulators had their best season to date also finishing at 8-2.  Three time league runner up Goin Deep struggled this year finishing the season 6-4 and taking an early exit in the playoffs.  Another new team to GSL Legion of Doom finished at 5-5 as they got used to the increased talent and style of play in the GSL.  Veterans Bench Warmers (5-5) and Blitz (3-7) had high and low moment during the regular season.  The final new team Team Elite struggled in their 1st season but show promise as they gained valuable experience playing in the ‘A’ league.

Palmetto Bugs started off by defeating the Blitz 20-6, then faced Legion of Doom.  They scored with 7 seconds left (20-13) to move on the championship game.  In the other half of the bracket, Atlanta Rat Pack started by defeating Team Elite 24-0 before losing to the Regulators 20-13.  BenchWarmer upset Area 41 24-13 before losing to the Regulators in the semi-finals 13-8.

In the Championship, Palmetto Bugs faced off against the Regulators.  Palmetto went to work quick jumping on top 14-0 in the 1st half and cruising to a 25-7 victory to win the Championship.  This was Palmetto Bugs 4 straight championship and the Regulators first time as runner up.

Titans GSL Summer “B” Champions

The Titans finished the Summer Season 13-0 and won the “B” Championship.  After completing the regular season 10-0 the Titans swept through the playoffs and defeated the Gunners 21-20 in overtime of the championship game.

12 teams competed in the Summer Season to for a chance to win the championship.  A single elimination tournament would decide the winner.  The biggest surprised of the playoffs were Weng Weng and P 4 L.  Weng Weng finished the season 4-6 and was seeded 7th in the playoffs.   They were able to put it all together by defeating #10 Maniacs(13-12), upsetting #2 P 4 L(26-20) before falling to the Gunners (13-0)  P 4 L the #2 seed had played strong all year and looked to reach their 1st championship game but ran into a “hot” Weng Weng team who defeated them.  On the other side of the bracket #1 seed Titans cruised into the championship game by defeating Supreme Clientele (26-0) and Indians (25-13).

The championship game featured the top seed Titans verses #3 Gunners.  The Gunners were a new team to the GSL but showed they would be a team to deal with all year long.  The Titans a veteran team with a fiery QB would have their hands full in this game.  It was a tight game from beginning to end as neither team could put the other away.  The Titans were able to drive down late in the game and tie the game up at 13-13.  The Gunners would try to score late but with time expired the Titans picked off the Hail Mary attempt and only a diving flag pull saved a TD on the return.  Overtime would be needed to decide our winner.  Gunners would win the toss and choose Defense 1st, so the Titans would start with the ball.  Two plays later the Titans were in the end zone and after the XP lead 21-13.  It only took 2 plays for the Gunners to get in the zone to make the score 21-20.  Not wanting to play for the tie the Gunners decide to go for the 2 point conversion and the win.  A low snap and overthrown pass in the back corner of the end zone seal the Championship for the Titans who win the game 21-20.  It was a great game that both teams deserved to win as both were worthy of being named Champions.

Blitz Winter 8-Man Champions

After finishing in 2nd the season before the Blitz returned for Winter action in hopes of winning a Championship.  They did exactly that in going 11-1 in being named GSL’s Winter 8-Man Champions.

The Blitz’s only loss came to Pray for Rain in overtime on a rainy day no less.  But they went on to avenge that loss and dominate the regular season and playoffs.  They finished the season the #1 seed and defeated the Panthers and then BenchWarmers in the championship 13-6.

Then BenchWarmers came out of nowhere to make it to the Championship game.  They defeated Wolfpac 35-0, upset Pray for Rain 27-18 before losing to the Blitz.

Bench Warmers Win 'B' Championship

06/09/2008by Mark Nations

Bench Warmers win Henderson “B” Championship

The Bench Warmers who just a year and half ago were found playing “pick up” football have won their 1st Championship.

Back then they had never played in any organized league when they were invited to play in the GSL.  They took the challenge and played every chance they could.  They played league games, state tournaments against top teams in the state and open tournaments against the best teams in the southeast.  Never quitting never giving up and even taking on more competition in the 8-Man contact league.  All that work and experience paid off as they defeated #1 seed Range Rovers 19-13 in the championship game.

The Range Rovers had defeated them earlier in the season 19-0 but they were determined to win the “ship” and the “shirts”  The #1 seed Range Rovers Defeated Headliners and Bad News to earn a birth in the Championship game.  Bench Warmers defeated Atlanta Rat Pack and Weekend Warriors to earn their spot.

It was a hard fought season seeing several new teams grow and get better as the season went along.  10 teams competed in the Henderson “B” League and all battled to the end in hopes of winning the Championship.

This league was to help give new and old teams more experience and build confidence and all teams showed they will be more competitive in the seasons to come.

Co-Ed Champions Finally Crowned

05/05/2008by Mark Nations

Rain had plagued the final few weeks and playoffs of GSL's Co-Ed Flag Football Season.  The season was due to end 4 weeks early but the weekly Friday night/Saturday morning rain pushed everything back.

With a break in the weather the Final 4 teams took the field to battle for the Co-Ed Championship.  First game featured #1 Seed Chronics vs #4 Seed No Drops.  The Chronics proved why they were the #1 seed and cruised easily to a win.

The next game pitted #2 seed Misfits vs #3 seed and defending Champion Mean Machine.  The misfits were short handed and played with only 6 players but were able to do what they needed to do and win the game and a spot in the championship game 18-0.

League rivals met as #1 faced #2.  Chronics had won the season series by winning 2 out of 3 games.  But Misfits came in on a roll by winning there last meet up 22-6.  The Misfits take the early advantage of a mistake by the Chronics as a failed snap cost the Chronics a safety.  The Chronics were able to over come their early miscue and find a receiver deep for a long touchdown pass.  The find an open female in the endzone for the extra point and take the lead into half 8-2.  Both teams battled back and forth in the 2nd half but a late Chronic interception off a bobbled catch attempt give the Misfits a chance late in the game.  They are able to drive down the field and have 3 shots at the endzone including a DROPPED catch in the endzone.  The Chronics knock down the final attempt of the Misfits and secure the win 8-2.

Congratulations 2007 Winter Co-Ed Champions The Chronics.

Untouchables Spring Fling Tournament Champions

04/29/2008by Mark Nations
Untouchables prove to be just that.

9 Teams participated in Georgia Sports Leagues Spring Fling Flag Football Tournament.  Three of the Top 5 National teams including the 7-Man National Champions (Palmetto Bugs) and Runner ups (Quick Strike) fought through the Heat and Rain this past weekend.

After Saturday’s pool play the top three seeds were as expected.  Untouchables (LA) finished as the #1 seed, followed by Palmetto Bugs (SC) and Quick Strike (LA) all finished undefeated after pool play.  Local teams Slow Motion, Vandals, and Shaw Dawgs were the 4, 5, and 6th seed and all finished 1-1.  The biggest surprise was Tough Draw (February Frenzy Tournament Winner) went 0-2 followed by Area 41 and The Blitz.

Everyone woke up to the usual Weekend rain storms but it had stopped in time for the 1st game.  Area 41 and The Blitz faced off to see who would play The Untouchables.  Both teams fought hard and were evenly matched.  Area 41 scored early in the 2nd half to take a 14-13 lead.  Late in the 2nd half the Blitz apparently scored to take the lead but a penalty nullified the score and Area 41 was able to hold on for the win.

Area 41 then faced top seeded Untouchables.  The Untouchables outscored their opponents 119-0 yesterday and didn’t slow down as the won 40-0.

Vandals and Slow Motion squared off to and provided one to the better games of the tournament.  Both teams went back at forth and late in the game the Vandals scored to pull with in 2 pts.  They were unable to convert and Slow Motion took the win to advance to the Semi-Finals against The Untouchables.

The Untouchable have outscored their opponents 159-0 and looked to have an easy path to the Championship game.  Unfortunately no one told that to Slow Motion who ended up giving them their toughest game yet.  The Untouchables lead 14-7 at half and lead late in the game 21-13.  Slow Motion was not ready to quit and scored with 14 sec. left to pull with in 2 pts.  Showing they were they to win they decided to go for 3 pts and the win.  Pulling a play out of the Boise St. play book Slow Motion attempted the hook and ladder but was unable to find to end zone.  The Untouchables dodge a bullet and secure their spot in the Championship game.

Palmetto Bugs took the walk over verses Tough Draw and Quick Strike then faced Shaw Dawgs for the right to face the Bugs.  Shaw Dawgs tried to hang with Quick Strike and play ball control but in the end The Strike was just too good, they advance with the win.

In the 2nd Semi-Final old rivals met again as Palmetto Bugs battled Quick Strike...  These teams have battled several times over the last few tournaments including twice in the National Championships.  This game resembled most of the others as both teams battled, and fought all the way to the end.  Tied at half 13-13 Palmetto dodged a bullet when Quick Strike dropped an apparent TD pass late in the 2nd half.  Palmetto took advantage and intercepted the next pass and was able to drive down for the go ahead TD. With 2:00 min. left and down by 7 Quick Strike was able to drive down to the 2 yard line.   And on 4th down and the game on the line they pulled off an excellently diagramed play to score with 24 secs. left.  No willing to tie, they decided to go for 2 and the win, but it was not meant to happen and Palmetto held on 20-19 and move on to the Championship verses Untouchables.

In the Championship game The Untouchables continued their stellar defensive play as the held Palmetto scoreless and won 14-0.  For the tournament The Untouchables shut out 4 of the 5 teams they played and was the most dominant team all tournament.  Congratulations Untouchables, GSL’s 2008 Spring Fling Champions.

This marks the 4th different tournament winner in GSL’s tournament history.

GSL 8-Man Contact League starts this weekend

03/13/2008by Mark Nations

Georgia Sports League’s will start its 2nd season of Saturday 8-Man Contact this weekend.  We have 4 new teams to go with 2 returning teams from last year.

UPS, Try N’ Keep Up, Wolf Pac, and The Bench Warmers are all new to the 8-Man league.  They join runner up The Blitz and The Knights in the Saturday 8-Man League.  The Bench Warmers are coming in like The Blitz did last season as they have been playing 7-Man and are looking to compete in the 8-Man Contact.  The Blitz who were also a 7-Man team finished 2nd last season as they improved each week as they learned the game.

UPS, Try N’ Keep Up and The Wolf Pac are unknowns and will be interesting to see where the season goes as these teams compete for the Spring League Championship.  The Blitz would come in as the favorite with Defending Champion DSL not playing this season.  The Knights look to improve after their 1st season in the league and will be competitive each week.  With the addition of 4 new teams anything is possible.

Good luck to all the teams this season.

GSLs WInter Playoffs Begin Sunday

03/13/2008by Mark Nations

GSL’s Winter playoffs will begin this week with 24 teams competing to be Winter League Champions.  Defending Champion Palmetto Bugs look to win their 3rd straight league championship.  This season they will face stronger competition in ATL Express, Goin Deep, Range Rovers, Regulators, and Tough Draw.  GSL’s Flag Football league has gotten much deeper in talent and each season proves to be more and more competitive.

There will be some interesting early round match ups.  Playoffs this season pitted the top seeds from the East Division verses the lower seeds from the West Division.

 Game of the Week #1

ACCC verses Field Mob II looks to be an interesting match up.  Field Mob the GSU Intramural Champions started the season off strong but have struggled as of late.  On the other side you have ACCC who have improved each week and play very strong team ball.  The Mob has the athletes but has not played well together and ACCC has counted on solid team play and steady play from there QB to lead them each week.

 Game of the Week #2

X-Factor verses Xplosion should be Xciting.  Players from both sides know each other very well.  Xplosion was a mentor team to X-Factor when the season 1st began   They helped with players and coaching and kept their confidence up even after they lost their 1st 4 games including 44-0 against X-Plosion.  Since then X-Factor is 5-1 and has turned their season around and look to make a run in the playoffs.  X-Plosion is 2-3 in their last 5 with some tough losses.  It will be interesting to see how this game plays out and if X-Factor can avenge that 44-0 loss in week 2.

Good luck to all the Playoff teams.  Playoffs will continue on March 30th after the Easter Break.

February Frenzy Tournament Results

02/19/2008by Mark Nations

Tough Draw proves to be just that……

Congratulations to Tough Draw who won the February Frenzy Flag Football Tournament.  8 teams from 3 states competed in Georgia Sports Leagues most recent tournament.

All 8 teams competed in pool play prior to the single elimination tournament which decided the winner.  Tough Draw was the only team to go undefeated by winning over Palmetto Bugs, SC All-Stars, and the Vandals.  Going undefeated made Tough Draw the #1 seed in the single elimination tournament.

In the other pool we had a 3-way tie at the top.  Goin Deep, Mt. Carmel (MS), and Pfuzion all finished at 2-1 in pool play.  Pfuzion won the tie-breakers to claim the top spot in the pool and the overall #2 seed.

In Sunday’s single elimination play Palmetto Bugs faced off against Goin Deep and Mt. Carmel played SC All-Stars.  The Bugs and Goin Deep are very familiar with each other and the result stayed the same as Palmetto advanced to the Semi-Final game against Pfuzion.  Two of the out of state team faced off in the other opening game, with Mt Carmel taking advantage of 5 All-Star interceptions in securing the win.  Mt. Carmel would advance to play #1 seed Touch Draw.

Semi-Final #1 was the game of the day with Palmetto Bugs (2-time defending 7-Man National Champions) facing Pfuzion (Top 10 8-Man National Ranked team) 2 of the most athletic teams in the tournament battled back in forth  and were tied 19 -19 with under 5 minutes to play.  Pfuzion was able to drive down the field and score with just under 2 minutes to play.  With plenty of time Palmetto was unable to drive down the field and fell short 25-19.

Semi-Final #2 pits Mt. Carmel (MS) against Tough Draw.  Mt. Carmel had been playing almost short handed all tournament since they lost a player 4 plays in the very 1st game.  This injury forced their coach into action clad in tennis shoes and not expecting to play.  Tough Draw one of the most experienced teams in the tournament contained top players from Georgia, Florida, and New Orleans.  This combination proved too much as Tough Draw won out 26-6 to advance to the Championship.

Championship game had Pfuzion vs. Tough Draw.  Pfuzions extremely tough semi-final game took it out of them as they were never able to sustain any kind of momentum.  Tough Draws talent and experience once again lead them as they won the championship game 26-6.

Tough Draw ended up 5-0 in the tournament.  Tournament MVP’s were Offensive MVP Boobie (Tough Draw) and Defensive MVP Darren (Tough Draw)

Final Standings

Tough Draw 5-0

Pfuzion 3-2

Mt. Carmel 3-2

Palmetto Bugs 2-2

SC All-Stars 1-3

Bench Warmers 0-3

Vandals 0-3
